EDUCATE 1

SCHOOL... that word alone sparks many thoughts and emotions. Some of you reading this may still be in school, may be celebrating your 20 year high school reunion, or spending your days driving back and forth taking your child to school. But we all have something in common....simply by the fact that you can read this; you have been educated in some way. However, many children in Ghana and around the world cannot say the same. Many children would have a stronger job resume than me and maybe you... which is HEART-BREAKING!

Our sweet friends at City Of Refuge Ministries, who we stayed with last week, are aiming to change that. They opened Faith Roots International Academy in September 2010. The school currently has an American director, two local Ghanaian teachers, and 17 students. The students are beginning to show improvement and confidence in their knowledge and ability to learn. They use the American curriculum, Alpha and Omega, while supplementing with Ghanaian curriculum tools. The children learn English, which is the main trade language of Ghana. It is their desire that every child will be able to complete senior high school. Currently in Ghana, only 30% of junior secondary school graduates (middle school) are able to gain admission to senior secondary schools (high school).

The new school building is under construction at the Children's Village in Doryum, Ghana. Their hope is to have phase one of the building completed in August 2011 and to have open enrollment for children within the village. The completed new building will have 15 classrooms for students in preschool through Senior high, a computer lab, library, administrative buildings, and eventually a soccer field, basketball court, and Arts center.

This was the school when we went in January 2011

This is the school today!!

A group out of Australia called YGAP has dedicated much of their time and resources to fundraise for the new school but we received word today that they will not have enough money fundraised for them to open in September. They have already hired some of the staff for the upcoming year, so please pray for these funds to come in. They have enough money to plaster the walls but need help to put on the roof and to finish furnishing the classrooms (doors, toilets, sinks, chairs, windows, etc), about $45,000 worth of work.

If you feel called to donate towards our school, we'd love to have you partner with us in that way. You can donate online at www.cityofrefugeoutreach.com. Just make sure to list "Faith Roots International Academy Building Fund" in the note line. If you'd like to donate by check, please write checks out to City of Refuge Ministries and send them to:

Education plays a significant role in releasing a child from poverty. An educated child is equipped with the tools to fight poverty and conquer disease. And school offers a safe, supportive environment for children to learn life skills and make friends.
